Ocongate is rather well known for several tourist attractions, such as the mountain Ausangate and the pilgrimage Qolloriti. It is also a district that has much breathtaking landscape (mountains, rivers, etc.).
Ocongate is located in the department of Cusco in Southern Peru. Ocongate belongs to the 5% of the poorest districts in Peru, according to the UNDP (United Nations Development Programme) Human Development Index.
Ocongate is now a two hour ride from Cusco, due mainly to the new highway that has been recently constructed (According to villagers from Ocongate before it could take anywhere from 8 hours to reach Cusco). Ocongate is a perfect example of how tourism does not cease to augment, but this does not necessarily reach the inhabitants in the villages.
Ocongate is mainly divided into two parts, one being the “Right Margen”, where DEXCEL is currently working in 8 communities, and the other is the “High Zone” where DEXCEL is also working in 8 communities.
DEXCEL started working in Ocongate in August 2007 with the indispensable efforts of the first Millennium Champ, Pieter Romein. It has had impressive results and the Municipality has become more and more enthusiastic. In July 2008, the opportunity presented itself through the enthusiasm of Dr. Carl Greer to contribute to the extension of the Pachamama Raymi Project in Ocongate. Also, as of recently Mr. Olecsy has committed to the financing of two communities in the district.
In parallel with these extensions, the DEXCEL team has worked in close collaboration with the municipality, who would like to use the Pachamama Raymi Project in all of its communities. |
